FL Studio is where a huge percentage of bedroom producers do their work. If you've just downloaded a vocal preset pack and aren't sure how to actually get it into FL Studio and onto your how to build a vocal chain from scratch — this guide walks you through every step.
Before we get into the how-to, let's clarify what a vocal preset is. A vocal preset is a pre-configured plugin chain — a set of effects (EQ, compressor, reverb, etc.) with specific settings designed to process a vocal and make it sound polished. Instead of building that chain from scratch, you load the preset and it's already there.
There are two main types you'll encounter:
VocalPresets.com presets are designed to work with professional plugins that have VST versions compatible with FL Studio.
If you're missing a plugin the preset requires, FL Studio will show a warning when you try to load it. Get the plugins installed first.
Open your FL Studio project. In the Mixer, create a new audio channel for your vocal:
F9 to open the Mixer if it's not openClick on the vocal channel in the Mixer. You'll see the FX chain area on the right side of the Mixer window. This is where you'll add your plugins.
Most vocal presets specify the order of plugins. The typical order is:
Click an empty slot in the FX chain and select your plugin from the dropdown. Add all the required plugins in the correct order.
Once a plugin is loaded, click on the plugin name in the FX chain to open it. To load your preset settings:
Repeat this for every plugin in the chain.
Once your full chain is loaded and all preset settings are applied, save it as an FL Studio FX preset so you can recall it easily:
Now you can load this entire chain in one click on any future session.
Here are some of the most popular presets ready to use in FL Studio:
All of these work in FL Studio and come with clear plugin compatibility information.
"Plugin not found" error — You're missing a required VST. Check the plugin list for the preset and install the missing plugin.
Preset sounds nothing like the demo — Check your gain staging. The vocal hitting the chain needs to be at the right level. Most presets assume a -18 to -12 dBFS input signal. Too hot or too quiet and it won't respond correctly.
Heavy CPU usage — FL Studio's Mixer can get CPU-heavy with complex plugin chains on multiple tracks. Freeze (render) vocal tracks you're not actively editing. Right-click the track → render to audio.
Plugins are there but preset isn't loading — Some plugins save presets in proprietary formats (.fxp, .fxb, etc.). Make sure you're loading the right file format for each plugin.
Before applying any preset, consider running your raw vocal recording through vocalenhancer.com first — it removes background noise and room tone, which gives your FL Studio preset chain cleaner material to work with.
That's it. Load the chain, adjust to your vocal, and get back to making music.
